Trip Overview

We’ll pick you up at your hotel bright and early and travel east in our comfortable van or small bus towards Puerto Almanza. On our way to this day trip from Ushuaia, we’ll pass rugged coastlines, ancient forests, and impressive waterfalls.

Puerto Almanza is a charming fishing port on the coast outside the southernmost city in the world. Nearly everyone who lives in the village is dedicated to specialized and sustainable fishing. They catch crab, centollones (King Crab), mussels, and other typical mollusks. You can expect a warm welcome from the local fishing community, who enjoy showing off their beautiful home and distinct way of life. When we arrive in the village we’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast prepared by a local family and an overview of the day’s activities.

While in Puerto Almanza, guests will have the opportunity to walk to a nearby waterfall and have the opportunity to zipline through Patagonia’s iconic nothofagus forests. Climb to higher ground where they can spot Port Williams in Chile, which is just on the other side of Beagle Channel from where you’ll be standing. A local guide will take guests on a photographic walk to show off the area’s impressive viewpoints. Finally, enjoy a kayak expedition in a serene inlet.

The day’s main attraction will be to join a local fisherman on a semi-rigid crabbing boat to check the pots! Pull up traps together and hope for a hefty haul. Our hosts will prepare a crab feast in a time-honored way for our lunch. This standard of southern Argentina’s traditional food involves boiling the crab in salty seawater. When lunch is ready, the locals will instruct us on how to best enjoy this local delicacy. At the end of the day, your Drake guide will bring you back to your hotel in Ushuaia.
