About the weather
The weather in Ushuaia can change by the minute! Please be ready for all types of weather and note that our itinerary may change due to the conditions.
We’ll pick you up at your hotel bright and early and travel east in our comfortable van or small bus towards Harberton Ranch. On our way to this day trip from Ushuaia, we’ll pass rugged coastlines, ancient forests, and impressive vistas. Arriving at the ranch, we’ll be warmly welcomed by the fourth-generation manager. This manager’s great-grandparents founded this historic estancia or estate and we’ll be given the opportunity to tour the grounds and learn about its history of wool production. Through the rustic tea-room windows, glimpse the wild scenery of Patagonia mountains. We’ll wrap up our time at the historic estate with a visit to the Acatushún Museum. In this natural history museum, you’ll learn about Patagonia’s animals both past and present.
Back in our comfortable tour vehicle, we’ll head on down the road to Puerto Almanza. This is a charming fishing village on the coast and nearly everyone who lives in the village is dedicated to specialized and sustainable fishing. They catch crab, centollones (Kind crab), mussels, and other typical mollusks. You can expect a warm welcome from the local fishing community who enjoy showing off their beautiful home and distinct way of life. Our hosts will prepare a crab feast in a time-honored way for our lunch, as the standard of southern Argentina’s traditional food involves boiling the crab in salty seawater. When lunch is ready, the locals will instruct us on how to best enjoy this local delicacy. Wash down your lunch with a sampling of locally brewed beer or a glass of Malbec.
After lunch, we will take a light walk along the seaside. Enjoy the sights and sounds of this tiny village and the spectacular views across the Beagle Channel. Then, we’ll hop in a Zodiac boat to visit a huge colony of Magellanic and Gentoo penguins. Rambling respectfully around these gracious seabirds, we learn about their lives and conservation. Exceptional photographs of this moment will be one of the greatest memories of your trip. At the end of the day, your Drake guide will bring you back to your hotel in Ushuaia.
The order of this experience might change, depending on the best time of day to see the Penguins.
