About the weather
The weather in Ushuaia can change by the minute! Please be ready for all types of weather and note that our itinerary may change due to the conditions.
We’ll pick you up from your hotel and set off to tour Ushuaia’s pioneer past. Our excursion in downtown will include Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced, a Catholic church founded by, Don Bosco and constructed in the 1940s by Salesian missionaries. A few meters away, we’ll observe Ushuaia’s oldest Catholic church, constructed in 1898.
As we continue to walk, you’ll see the famous Saint Christopher, a beached ship that pays homage to the many shipwrecks that this port, famous to explorers, has known. Continuing with our look at the old town of Ushuaia, we will pass the Obelisk where the Argentinian flag was first raised at the founding of Ushuaia, in 1884. Enjoying another beautiful view of Ushuaia Bay, we will arrive at the First Governor’s House. This modern-day museum was once the seat of the first governor of the territory, a post office, and a national bank.
As we move back into the city we will finish our walk, and recharge and refuel with a cup of coffee and a factura, a traditional Argentinian pastry or take them to-go depending on the weather.
Our next stop is the Ex-Penitentiary Museum, where we’ll enjoy an hour-long guided tour. This creepy building holds the key to Ushuaia’s founding and an important part of its past. The museum’s storyteller presents visitors with the memories and artifacts of this mysterious past.
Free to leave the prison, we’ll hop in our comfortable tour van and head southeast along the coast of the Beagle Channel. Enjoy views of the pristine channel as we drive to the Beacon Viewpoint. Here we can see the entire city of Ushuaia in one picture. We’ll spend some time enjoying the Beagle Channel and sweeping views of the port city and surrounding nature. Next, it’s on to Playa Larga Nature Reserve, where we’ll take a peaceful walk in the surrounding forest. Stunning wind-shaped trees and Patagonia mountain views will surround us as we walk.
Heading back to the city along the coast, we’ll pass an industrial area and hear about its economic importance to the Province. Arriving back in town, we’ll stop at the iconic USHUAIA letters sign in front of beautiful Bay. It’s another great photo opportunity. From there we can see military housing built to lodge the first families who arrived in Ushuaia, coming south from warmer parts. The old airport also has its own unique history and an infamously dangerous landing strip.
Our tour ends with traditional Argentine dishes, including barbecued lamb and trout, for lunch at a local restaurant. Enjoy the best that this wild region has to offer! After the tour, we’ll transport you wherever you would like to go in the city. You may want to walk around town by yourself, take a transfer back to your hotel, or head straight to your cruise ship to begin your Antarctic Adventure.
